Monument to the Nation, Language, and the Millennium of the Name of Lithuania
On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the mention of Lithuania’s name, one of the most significant monuments of independent Lithuania was erected in Marijampolė—a monumental work embodying the nation’s strength, the survival of the language, and historical memory. For this project, granite was supplied by UAB “Žybartuva,” ensuring not only the selection of the highest quality stone but also all tasks related to its supply.
Technical characteristics of the monument:
- Height of the sculpture: approximately 19 meters
- Weight: ~300 tons
- Material: pinkish granite (for the column and base), carefully selected for its strength and expressive texture
- Symbolism:
- Square base – the four ethnographic regions of Lithuania
- Spiral column – the nation’s path, continuous striving for survival
- Rider on a young horse with a spear – a reborn, dynamic, free, and creative nation
- Horse – one of the symbols of the Lithuanian nation, depicted in both the coat of arms of Lithuania and Marijampolė
- Four bas-reliefs:
- Dedication: TO THE NATION, LANGUAGE, AND THE MILLENNIUM OF THE NAME OF LITHUANIA (1009–2009)
- Prehistory: origins of the Lithuanian language
- Middle Ages: scene of the printing of M. Mažvydas’ “Catechism” (1547)
- Modern language: the influence of linguist J. Jablonskis
Construction of the monument began in March 2009, when a capsule with a letter to future generations was embedded in the foundation. UAB “Žybartuva” contributed both to the production of granite details and logistical solutions. The unveiling ceremony took place on September 6, 2009.
Zybartuva’s contribution:
This exceptional project required not only quality materials but also technical preparation—the production of large-scale granite elements, surface processing, and logistical solutions were implemented with exceptional precision and efficiency. The monument in Marijampolė became not only a symbol of the city but also a vivid example of UAB “Žybartuva’s” high competence in the field of memorial architecture.
