In 2013, during Lithuania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, a significant international memorial was erected in Budapest—a monument to the royal couple, Jogaila and Jadwiga. This sculptural composition in the old town of Buda commemorates the deep historical ties between Lithuania, Hungary, and Poland. The monument symbolically reminds us of the importance of the Jagiellonian dynasty in the development and cultural cooperation of Central European nations and states. The monument is located in a prominent, historically significant area of Budapest—next to the Buda defensive wall and the Vienna Gate, very close to the Royal Palace and the Fisherman’s Bastion, offering views of the Danube and the Parliament buildings.

The composition, weighing about 15 tons, consists of five granite elements: the seated figures of Jogaila and Jadwiga, a central stele with coats of arms, maps, and symbols of authority of historical states, and two side steles inscribed with the couple’s reign dates. The monument was created according to the artistic vision of sculptor Dalia Matulaitė, in collaboration with architect Juras Balkevičius and artist Vladimir Stankevičius, who executed the sculpture’s realization. “Žybartuva” was responsible for all granite supply and production work, contributing to the high-quality implementation of this culturally significant project.

“Žybartuva” supplied and prepared all granite products and installed the granite paving stones. Technical project specifications:

  • Bjärlöv (Champagne) (Sweden) is a light sandy-toned granite characterized by an exceptionally uniform grain structure. Its subtle variegation is well-suited for representative and historical sites. The surface is matte polished, maintaining the stone’s naturalness and artistic integrity, and harmonizing with the urban environment. This granite was chosen not only for its aesthetics but also for its resistance to weather conditions and the passage of time. The inscriptions are sandblasted, ensuring the letters are clear and subtly integrated into the main stone surface.
  • Granite paving stones—paving stones for the site and base were also made from the same Bjärlöv (Champagne) stone. This created a unified, cohesive architectural and visual solution, emphasizing the monument’s monumentality and subtle elegance.
