Memorial for the 1863–1864 Uprising on Gediminas Hill
The memorial dedicated to the memory of the 1863–1864 uprising insurgents on the Gediminas Hill platform is a symbolic step towards restoring historical memory. For many years, it was unknown where the publicly executed participants of the uprising, including leaders Zigmantas Sierakauskas and Konstantinas Kalinauskas, were secretly buried. The memorial for the insurgents has risen on the historically significant central terrace of Gediminas Hill, covered with stone paving and grass, harmonizing with the environment of Vilnius’s Upper and Lower Castles. The memorial on Gediminas Hill consists of two main elements – a monumental yet non-dominant granite sculpture in three languages and nameplates embedded in the paving. These plates immortalize the names of the uprising participants, allowing each visitor to literally ‘read’ this historical memory while walking across the platform.
“Žybartuva” supplied, prepared, and installed all granite products. Technical project specifications:
Bjärlöv (Champagne) – a light brownish Swedish granite, chosen for both the base of the sculptural composition and the commemorative plaques with the insurgents’ names. The sculptural part of the memorial is made from polished granite, while the nameplates are bush-hammered, with sandblasted inscriptions.
